Topic 8: A Movie You Watched RecentlyQuestion: Describe a movie you watched and enjoyed recently.Answer: So the movie that I watched and enjoyed very recently, actually, it was last night, was a 90s movie, I think it was from 1998. And it"s called Kiss the Girls. And it is a kind of a crime thriller starring Morgan Freeman. So Morgan Freeman is, in this film, a forensic psychologist. So he"s someone who tries to understand serial killers and then tries to prevent them from killing or tries to catch them in some way. I watched this movie last night. I watched it in my house on Netflix, and it"s one of those films that I"ve had on my list on Netflix for probably about a year. And I just never got around to watching it until last night. And I just had a bit of free time, and I thought, okay, yeah, I"ll watch that. I watched it with my wife, and we both really enjoyed it.And the plot is basically, there is a serial killer, and he has kidnapped a lot of young women, including the niece of Morgan Freeman"s character. So Morgan Freeman not only has a professional interest in the case, because he"s a forensic psychologist, but he also has a personal interest in the case. And the story is essentially the way in which he tries to figure out who this serial killer is and how he can catch him and how he can save all of the different people who he"s kidnapped and is planning to kill.And so the reason I watched it, more than just having a bit of free time, is that I love the style of 1990s Hollywood crime thrillers. There are a lot of really good movies from the middle and late 1990s in kind of the same style with actors like Morgan Freeman, Brad Pitt, Anthony Hopkins, Michael Douglas. And I really enjoy watching that kind of movie. It"s very much my taste. So that was the movie that I watched and enjoyed very recently.Question: Why do people often prefer to watch movies in the cinema?Answer: I think the main reason is that it"s more of an event. If you"re watching a movie at home, you always have the chance to pause it, to go and get a snack or to look at your phone, or you watch the first half of a movie, and then you watch the second half the following night. Whereas if you"re in the cinema, you can"t do that unless you own the cinema, which most people probably don"t. So you have to pay attention to the whole film.And, of course, you also have to pay for the entrance ticket. So we tend to watch films at the cinema only if they"re the films that we really want to watch. So they"re more special in that sense, and you"re forced to sit and watch the whole thing. So I think that"s one of the many reasons why people prefer to watch movies in the cinema.Question: Do people in your country prefer to watch domestic movies or foreign movies?Answer: Well, I think we do enjoy watching British movies here, but we also really enjoy Hollywood movies. And that"s definitely the most popular type of movie for British people to watch. And a big part of that is that the budgets are much bigger.It"s got all of the famous actors, but more than anything, those films are also in English. Whereas if you go and speak to the average British person on the street and ask them, "When was the last time you watched a film that wasn"t in English?" it might be a year ago, it might be ten years ago. We"re quite reluctant to watch films that are not in English, but we don"t mind watching, say, American films that are in English because it"s easy for us to understand.Question: Do you think only well-known directors can create the best movies?Answer: I don"t know about this because, for example, there"s a really, really amazing film called Reservoir Dogs, which was the first film, I believe, created by now a very famous director called Quentin Tarantino. But I think when he made that film, he wasn"t famous, he wasn"t well known. And that was his way of breaking out into the world of directing and acting and things like that. So I think it"s probably more likely that good films will be made by well-known directors.
