Topic 11: A Person with Strong OpinionsQuestion: Describe a person who has strong opinions.Answer: Well, the person I"d like to describe who has strong opinions is my friend Tom. So Tom is someone who I"ve known for many, many years. We went to school together, and even when we were 11 or 12 years old, he always had very, very strong opinions. He"s very much a black or white person. He doesn"t really believe in giving a "it depends" kind of an answer. Instead, he prefers to come down very hard on one side of an argument or very hard on the other side of the argument. Whereas I"m a person who likes to sit on the fence a little bit more. I like to go in the middle and say, well, sometimes in that situation, this could be true, but in a different situation, something else could be true.But having said all of that, I think that we get on very well because he knows that I always sit on the fence, and I know that he always takes a strong opinion, and we have fun and we accept that. What kind of stronger person my friend has, really? It can be anything. It could be a strong opinion about sports, about music, about culture, about food. He really does like to take a strong opinion on almost every topic. One thing that he does do is he respects when people have more knowledge than he does, and so he"ll bow to people"s greater experience. But if there"s no one in that particular situation who has a lot of experience, then he"ll very often make up his mind about a topic very quickly, and not always in a particularly logical way, in my opinion. So we have a lot of fun. We"ve had a few arguments, but not many. And he is my friend who has very strong opinions.Question: Do you think it"s good to have strong opinions?Answer: Well, I think as long as those opinions are backed by proper information, hopefully by fact or by some kind of evidence, then yes, of course, it"s good to be able to have strong opinions. It shows that you have some confidence. I think if you can take a strong opinion on something, but of course, if you"re just throwing a coin in the air and deciding your opinion based on where it lands, meaning if you don"t have good evidence for your strong opinion, then I think it"s more likely to cause arguments and to cause unnecessary stress and heartache because very often people will get insulted if you take a very strong opinion that ends up being very wrong or where other people really disagree. So I think in the right situation, a strong opinion can be very good, but it can also be a little bit dangerous as well.Question: Which is more important, listening to others or persuading others?Answer: I think, and this is a classic Francis answer, it"s a little bit of both. So it"s definitely important to listen to other people"s opinions when you"re deciding your own opinion and to listen to the experience of other people. You don"t want to be one of those people who has no ability to listen to others because those people are very difficult to deal with. But if you feel like you"re right, you feel like you have the evidence, you have facts that support your opinion, then it can definitely be an important thing to try to persuade others. But my first instinct is always to listen to others and to get a range of opinions before I decide my final position.Question: Do you think we should only say something after thinking it through?Answer: Well, I think it depends on what it is. Like, if you"re just chatting to your friends, then it"s perfectly fine to, like, talk a load of nonsense and you don"t have to. It would be very boring if you started to think things through. But if you are, for example, having an important meeting or you"re doing a job interview or something where people are really listening carefully to what you"re saying, then, yes, I think it"s definitely better to take a moment, think about what you"re going to say and then say it, rather than just rushing in with the first thing that jumps into your mind.编辑：Moon李▼IDE英创教育
