While I’m certainly not an advocate of corporal punishment and I do understand that frequently criticizing children can affect their self-esteem, I also believe that giving kids nothing but affirmation is just going to spoil them and make it very difficult for them to learn right from wrong. Children aren’t born with any understanding of what behavior is proper and what behavior is unacceptable, so it’s the job of parents to set boundaries and provide guidance that will allow their little ones to participate smoothly in civilized society. Correcting kids when they’re misbehaving is an essential part of this important task.
