Topic: Helping OthersPart 3: DiscussionWhy do some people avoid asking for help even when they need it?Well, it’s an interesting question. I think the best answer I can give is that people are proud—it’s their pride that won’t let them ask for help, even at times when they clearly do need some help with something.It’s particularly, I think, a masculine thing—a kind of macho culture—where people, especially guys, don’t like to admit if they’ve gotten lost, for example. This is true of me, in fact. We always want to seem like we’re in control and know where we’re going, even if inside our brain is panicking, thinking, "Oh no, I don’t know where I am." If we admit that and ask for help, it feels like a sign of weakness, and we don’t really want to show that. So, I think that’s probably the main reason.In what ways can communities encourage more people to volunteer?Well, I think the main thing would be to let potential volunteers know about what the opportunities are and give them an idea of how they could be helping.If I speak for my own personal case, I would certainly be willing to go and volunteer and give some of my time to help people in need or animals in need, but I wouldn’t really know where to start. So, I think the main thing that communities could do is to be more visible in terms of asking for help or showing exactly where people can go to find out more information about volunteering.Now, it wouldn’t persuade everyone to go and volunteer, but I think that’s an unrealistic goal. But certainly, if you put more information out there, the people who perhaps wouldn’t search out that information themselves but would be willing to volunteer if they heard more details, would find out and then you’d have more people coming to volunteer.So, that would be my suggestion for communities.
